Like in Dungeons and Dragons, playable character races provide benefits and disadvantages to each selection, forcing players to adapt with their choice and evolve throughout the story. It's also top notch mechanically as of this patch that gave it a shit ton more stuff - more than doubling the number of gaze options, and letting you pick a gaze at every rank instead of every 2 ranks.
